After the business portion of the meeting, Ralph Lieberman spoke about the 1856 Yeomans lithograph “Williamstown from Stone Hill,” his work to enlarge and recolor the piece, and the special place it occupies in the new Williams Inn. There was also be a display of historical images of the town from Stone Hill.
The lithograph depicts Williamstown in 1855, when the area was largely farmland punctuated by a few college, town, and church buildings. George Yeomans was a Williams College undergraduate who published this work the year he graduated from college. As the original road linking Pittsfield, Massachusetts to Bennington, Vermont via Williamstown ran directly over Stone Hill, visitors on horseback, in carriages, and later in automobiles would have been able to enjoy this vantage point as they traversed Stone Hill Road. Today we can still enjoy a portion of this view on foot.
